This striped beakfish from Japan apparently hitched a ride in a small boat after the 2011 tsunami. It reached the Washington coast last month and is being exhibited at Oregon’s Seaside Aquarium
Some coal dust will escape along the journey from Powder River Basin mines in Montana and Wyoming if trains and barges are used to transport the fossil fuel to proposed export terminals in the Northwest. The question is: what could that dust do to the environment? Read more at EarthFix.

Perhaps it does not seem cause for celebration that the Oregon spotted frog, a four-inch-long amphibian that prefers the Pacific Northwest’s dwindling marshy spots, is to be considered this year for federal protection as an endangered species.
Tell that to the frog. It has been languishing for 22 years — since 1991 — awaiting its day in the bureaucratic sun.
